The internet is buzzing about Davido and Takura. But this connection didn't start with a tweet. It's been building in studios, DMs, and conversations most people never saw.
I know, because I was in some of those rooms.
December 2024: Lagos, With Oxlade
When I linked up with Oxlade in Lagos, the conversation turned to Zimbabwean music. Unprompted, he mentioned Takura. Not as a question, but as a reference point.
That was the first sign. Nigeria wasn't just aware of us. They were paying attention.
April 2025: The Marvey Session
Four months later, I was back in Lagos recording my debut EP. In the studio with Marvey Muzique, Davido's producer.
We're working, vibing, and Marvey brings up Takura again. He's the touch point. The name that comes up when Nigeria thinks Zimbabwe. They'd been working on something.
Then Marvey heard my track "Chioma Na Davido." He wanted to play it for Davido.
I never followed up. Maybe it was studio excitement. Maybe I wasn't ready. But the door was open.
That's the point. The doors are open.
The Public Receipts
What happened in private eventually went public:
- Davido sliding into Takura's DMs (Takura posted the screenshot)
- The Instagram comment on King of Hearts: "Every record fire!!! new fan"
- Takura confirming on Star FM: "I have one collaboration with Davido, and there are more to come"
- And now, the tweet: "Takura is coming" with the Zimbabwe flag. 38K views and counting
What This Means For Zimbabwe
This isn't just about Takura. It's a signal.
When Afrobeats giants start reaching into a market, it precedes investment. Features. Tours. Label interest. We saw it with South Africa. We're seeing it now.
But signals mean nothing without response.
Level up production. Nigerian producers are world-class. We need to match that standard.
Collaborate strategically. Not for clout, for craft. Learn their systems.
Push harder. The world is watching. This is not the moment to coast.
Takura opened a door. The question is: who else is walking through?
